Located amidst the Kosi River is an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Garjiya, known as the Garjiya Devi. This temple holds great spiritual significance as it is considered to be one of India’s 108 Shakti Peeth, which are revered places of worship. The name Garjiya is derived from the Sanskrit word “Girija,” which means daughter of the mountain, a name of Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva. During the monsoon season, the temple is surrounded by the river’s floodwaters.
The illustrious Garjiya Devi temple is situated in the Garjiya hamlet near Ramnagar, approximately 14 kilometers away. It is located adjacent to the Jim Corbett National Park, next to NH 121. After paying their respects to Maa Garjiya Devi at the temple, visitors often take a dip in the nearby Kosi river’s pristine waters.
To reach the Garjiya Devi shrine, one must ascend around sixty stairs. Devotees typically offer puffed rice to the deity, which can be purchased at any of the many makeshift shops near the temple. Additionally, a piece of red fabric with golden borders, known as the Goddess Chunari, is presented to the Devi. Devotees believe that tying this cloth on the temple’s surrounding grill will bring their wishes to fruition, and thus, they attach it there after making their offering to the Devi.
